The Bakken Oil Formation is possibly the largest conventional oil discovery in Canada since 1957. If this oil formation plays out toward the higher end of size and recoverability, then it will change the geopolitics of oil and the economics of the United States and Canada. If a lot of the oil proves difficult to recover now, new technologies could still drastically improve the percent recoverable. The motivation to pull out another 100 billion barrels would be $9 trillion plus at today’s prices.

The Bakken oil field play is causing an insane oil boom in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It doesn’t take 10 years to process it, it takes a week or two to build the surface lease, drill it with a drilling rig, run casing, move the drilling rig to the next location, move on a service rig for completion and tie it into a battery and pipeline. If you want to get rich, move to Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North and South Dakota or Montana and work in the oil patch.

It was not until 2007, when EOG Resources of Texas started a frenzy when they drilled a single well in Partial, N.D. It is expected to yield 700,000 barrels of oil that real excitement and money started to flow in North Dakota. Marathon Oil is investing $1.5 billion and drilling 300 new wells in what is expected to be one of the greatest booms in oil discoveries since oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia in 1938.
